Ryan Gosling Blames ‘Angry Birds’ For ‘The Nice Guys’ Not Getting a Sequel

Ryan Gosling has pointed the finger at ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ for putting the kibosh on a sequel to ‘The Nice Guys,’ where he co-starred with Russell Crowe. Plans were afoot for a follow-up to the 2016 comedy helmed by Shane Black. However, Gosling suggests that the clash in release dates led to less-than-stellar box office numbers, sealing the fate of any sequel hopes.

“Much of a sequel’s fate, I reckon, is determined by how it fares in its opening weekend,” Gosling revealed to Comic Book. “We went up against ‘Angry Birds’ and well, ‘Angry Birds’ just wiped the floor with us. They even got themselves a sequel.”

During its debut weekend, ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ raked in a hefty $38 million (£30 million) at the box office, while ‘The Nice Guys’ only managed to pull in $11.2 million (£8.9 million). Consequently, ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ secured a sequel in 2019, leaving ‘The Nice Guys’ sequel dreams in the dust.

Flashback to 2023, and Josh Homme shared some of his all-time favourite flicks, including ‘The Nice Guys’ among them. “I’m a sucker for ‘The Nice Guys’,” he enthused last summer. “Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I stick on this gem with Ryan Gosling and … Russell Crowe. It’s hilariously witty, and there’s something about the banter that’s reminiscent of Abbott and Costello. The dialogue just lifts my spirits.”
