The House Oversight and Accountability subcommittee, responsible for technology and privacy oversight, has extended an invitation to actress Scarlett Johansson to participate in a hearing focused on deepfakes and artificial intelligence. The hearing aims to provide Johansson with a platform to share her concerns with Congress and contribute to the ongoing public discourse on deepfake technology.
According to a statement from the subcommittee chair, Rep. Nancy Mace, the hearing will address broader issues surrounding the uses and potential abuses of deepfake technology. This invitation follows Johansson's recent criticism of Chat GPT's voiced AI assistant, Sky, which she found to closely resemble her own voice.

Johansson had previously declined an offer to voice an AI assistant for Open AI CEO Sam Altman. However, upon hearing the released demo, she expressed shock and anger, believing the voice to be remarkably similar to her own. Open AI has denied any intention to emulate Johansson's voice with Sky.
Despite the invitation, a source close to Johansson stated that she would be unavailable to attend the July hearing due to being out of the country on the scheduled date. This isn't the first time Johansson has encountered issues related to AI-generated content; in 2011, her nude photos were stolen and shared online, and she has since faced manipulated videos featuring her likeness.
