Sean Paul Vows to Keep Making Music Until He’s “Dead Like a Tyre”

During a recent appearance at the Wireless Festival in London, Jamaican dancehall icon Sean Paul made it clear that retirement is not on his radar. In an interview with NME, Paul expressed his commitment to his music career, declaring, “No, man, me nah retire ’til me dead like a tyre.

Trust me now, man.” He acknowledged that growing older presents its challenges, noting that while “it gets harder,” staying active in music keeps him feeling youthful. The ‘Temperature’ hitmaker shared an interesting tidbit, saying, “I read a little thing yesterday that said if you attend two concerts or two festivals every month, you’re going to gain nine years of your life, so I’mma live forever! You know what I mean?”

Paul emphasized his passion for performing, especially at festivals where he felt a special connection with the audience. He described these events as a vibrant convergence of people who come together to celebrate and have fun. “What I’m saying is this is a synergy and a gathering of people, of like-minded people who want to just party and have fun,” Paul said. He extended his appreciation to festival-goers and organizers, acknowledging the important role they play in creating these memorable experiences.

The Grammy-winning artist also took a moment to reflect on the deeper significance of music in his life. “To me, music is a thing that helps you evolve, and it helps to keep you young at the same time, so that’s omnipotent,” he philosophized. “That’s like God, so big up, God, and big up, music.” True to his word, Paul’s touring schedule remains packed, with upcoming performances scheduled across Canada in August and September.

Paul’s latest album, ‘Scorcha’, released in 2022, has been followed by a series of singles and collaborations. Notably, he teamed up with Will Smith for the track ‘Light ‘Em Up’, featured on the ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’ soundtrack. Despite his extensive career spanning nearly three decades, Paul continues to influence the music scene, as evidenced by Ice Spice’s recent single ‘Gimme a Light’, which samples his 2001 hit ‘Gimme the Light’.

Paul expressed his enthusiasm for the modern use of his music, appreciating Ice Spice’s work and the positive energy she brings to the industry. “She’s a great artist. She’s out there performing tonight. Everybody was screaming. So I feel good about the vibe,” he commented, showing support for both the artist and the ongoing evolution of dancehall and reggae culture.
