Seismic Activity Confirmed at Taylor Swift’s Concert in Los Angeles

A recent study by Caltech and UCLA researchers sheds light on a surprising phenomenon – the seismic activity generated by Taylor Swift concerts. The research, titled ‘Shake to the Beat: Exploring the Seismic Signals and Stadium Response of Concerts and Music Fans’, delves into the science behind these ‘Swiftquakes’.

The study focuses on Taylor Swift’s August 2023 concert at SoFi Stadium. The energetic crowd of 70,000 fans, affectionately known as ‘Swifties’, created a measurable impact. Their collective jumping and dancing produced “distinct harmonic tremors,” according to the report. These tremors weren’t caused by the music itself, but rather by the synchronised movement of the audience.

Researchers used spectrograms, visualisations of sound frequencies, to identify specific songs that generated the strongest tremors. ‘Shake It Off’ emerged as the top culprit, with a local magnitude of 0.851. ‘Love Story’ also showed significant amplitude, suggesting these fan favourites triggered a particularly enthusiastic movement.

To understand the scale of ‘Swiftquakes’, the researchers compared the data to seismic activity caused by other major concerts at SoFi Stadium. Concerts by Beyoncé, Metallica, and Morgan Wallen were included in the analysis. This comparison helped quantify the unique impact of Taylor Swift’s dedicated fanbase. This study builds upon earlier observations made by seismologist Jackie Caplan-Auerbach. She previously detected seismic activity linked to Taylor Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour show in Seattle last year.

The recent release of the ‘Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)’ concert film on Disney+ adds another layer to this story. The film, initially a theatrical release with a shortened setlist, has now expanded to include the full concert experience on the streaming platform.
