Selena Gomez Reflects on Personal Growth Since 2022 Documentary

Recently, Selena Gomez opened up about her journey toward self-love in an honest conversation at the SXSW panel ‘Mindfulness Over Perfection: Getting Real On Mental Health.’ When questioned about the influence of her 2022 Apple TV+ documentary, ‘My Mind & Me,’ which focused on mental health, the 31-year-old ‘Love On’ singer, who was accompanied by her mother and Wondermind co-founder Mandy Teefey, didn’t hold back.

Gomez said, “It makes me sick to hear the things that I was saying about myself in the beginning,” with unvarnished honesty. It makes me sad.” The star of ‘The Only Murders in the Building’ admitted that the six-year film chronicled her battle with self-doubt, issues with body image, s*icidal thoughts that forced her to cancel a tour, a bipolar disorder diagnosis, and the difficulties of being a well-known worldwide celebrity experiencing burnout.

The pop singer stressed the value of being kind to oneself—a lesson she acknowledged she wasn’t quite getting at the beginning of the documentary. Gomez revealed that after watching ‘Girl, Interrupted’ and talking about the quirks of the entertainment business, she had a talk with her mother that gave her the idea to talk about her struggles. She said she didn’t feel like she “fit in.”

The ‘Lose You to Love Me’ singer acknowledged during the discussion that addressing mental health issues is a personal decision and that “you can’t force someone” to do so until they’re ready. In retrospect, Gomez acknowledged that she had reached her lowest point and underlined the importance of taking care of one’s mental health at one’s own pace.

In December 2021, Gomez and Teefey established Wondermind, an online community that offers a secure forum for people to talk about mental health issues. The pair wants to encourage candid discussions and offer assistance to people who are navigating their mental health journey.
