Selena Gomez Reflects on The Stress of Touring: “It’s Very Draining for Me”

Selena Gomez, the acclaimed singer and founder of Rare Beauty, has expressed uncertainty about returning to the stage for another tour. In a recent cover story for TIME, Gomez opened up about the emotional challenges that come with touring, revealing why she feels ambivalent about the prospect.

“Nothing makes me happier than 90 minutes of being with my fans and just celebrating together,” Gomez shared with TIME. Despite this joy, she admitted to feeling “50/50” about touring due to its emotional demands. “It is very emotionally draining for me. And then you realize you’re just surrounded by a bunch of people that you’re paying,” the 31-year-old explained.

Gomez’s last tour was in 2016 for her album ‘Revival’. However, she had to cut it short due to struggles with anxiety and depression, conditions exacerbated by her battle with lupus.

In her interview, Gomez also touched on the importance of surrounding herself with genuine people who are unaffected by her fame. “It’s a cliché, but girls are mean. It’s a very weird competition, being in the cool girl’s area—and then I’m just kind of like there. I don’t know where I’m meant to belong,” she said. She finds solace in friends who are grounded and uninterested in her celebrity status, including a real estate agent who is among her closest confidantes.

Despite her close circle, Gomez acknowledged that she still experiences loneliness. “It’s hard. You could be in a crowd of people and still feel alone. I still deal with that,” she said, emphasizing the importance of acknowledging and feeling one’s emotions.

While a new tour might not be imminent, Gomez remains active in her career. Recently, she attended the Cannes Film Festival to promote her film ‘Emilia Pérez’, in which she plays the wife of a drug cartel leader. The film features Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón and follows a unique storyline involving a secret sex change operation.

Additionally, Gomez is busy filming the next season of the popular Hulu series ‘Only Murders in the Building’, alongside Steve Martin and Martin Short. Fans are also eagerly awaiting a potential ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ revival, where she might reprise her beloved role as Alex Russo.

In her personal life, Gomez cherishes her relationship with her boyfriend Benny Blanco. She spoke candidly about the challenges of public scrutiny and the resilience Blanco shows in the face of criticism. “I know what people can do to people I love,” she said, acknowledging the sometimes harsh comments from fans. “But he has the strength in him that none of that noise fazes him. It’s really impressive, and I just cherish every moment with him.”

For now, Gomez remains focused on her various projects and personal well-being, leaving the door open for future tours but prioritizing her mental and emotional health above all.
