Selena Gomez Wins ‘Best Actress’ at Cannes Film Festival for ‘Emilia Pérez’

Selena Gomez won the Best Actress prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the Spanish film ‘Emilia Pérez.’ The pop star shares the award with her co-stars Karla Sofia Gascón, Adriana Paz, and Zoe Saldaña. Directed by Jacques Audiard, ‘Emilia Pérez’ is a musical crime comedy about a woman helping an escaped Mexican cartel leader undergo sex reassignment surgery.

The film received a lengthy standing ovation at its premiere and also won the Jury Prize. Netflix has since acquired the film. This prestigious win highlights Gomez’s gradual transition from music to a full-time acting career. In January, she hinted at possibly quitting music to focus more on acting.

Gomez is set to portray veteran musician Linda Ronstadt in an upcoming biopic. Additionally, she will reprise her role in the Disney sitcom ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ for its sequel series. Despite these acting commitments, she released her new single ‘Love On’ in February, her first release of 2024, hinting at a possible fourth album.

Earlier this month, Gomez discussed her mental health, sharing that she has reduced her online presence, even disabling Instagram comments for all but her friends to create personal boundaries. She previously opened up about hitting “rock bottom” with her mental health and reflected on her 2022 documentary ‘My Mind & Me’ during a SXSW panel.
