Shania Twain Reflects on ‘Second Chance’ After Regaining Her Voice Post Throat Surgery
Shania Twain recently shared how her past vocal cord surgery played a crucial role in helping her overcome stage fright. Reflecting on her journey, she explained, “It was really about my throat surgery.
I lost my singing voice for several years, and regaining it through open-throat surgery reset my reality.” Twain, who once feared she’d never sing again, had to relearn how to use her voice after being diagnosed with nerve damage caused by Lyme disease. She underwent open-throat surgery to strengthen the nerves, a procedure that gave her a “second chance” at the craft she loves.

Twain’s determination and dedication to music have been unwavering. She mentioned that the surgery forced her to confront her fears and reignited her passion. “When you realise you have another chance at something you love, you put fear aside to do it — and that’s what I did,” she said.
Despite concerns about her vocal longevity, she’s savouring every moment she can perform, “I may not be able to do this forever, but right now I’m just enjoying where I am.”
She also revealed how fellow musician Jon Bon Jovi turned to her for advice when facing vocal issues, ultimately undergoing the same surgery. Twain emphasised the importance of resilience, stating, “The voice and the desire to never give up got me through the challenging operation.”
As host of the People’s Choice Country Awards, Twain expressed her enduring love for the creative side of the industry. She explained, “I love songwriting, design, and production. There’s so much more to being an artist than just standing on stage, and it’s fun to share that with fans.”
