‘Spaceman’: Everything We Know So Far

Adam Sandler is set to embark on a new interstellar adventure in the upcoming sci-fi drama, ‘Spaceman.’ The film, directed by Johan Renck of ‘Chernobyl’ fame and based on Jaroslav Kalfař’s 2017 novel, ‘Spaceman of Bohemia,’ is poised to take audiences on an extraordinary journey beyond the stars.

The narrative centres around Jakub Procházka, portrayed by Sandler, an orphaned boy from the Czech countryside who defies the odds to become the first astronaut of the independent Czech Republic. Sent on a mission to the outer reaches of space, Jakub encounters an ancient celestial companion hidden in his spacecraft, setting the stage for an intergalactic odyssey of love, ambition, and self-discovery.

Unlike Sandler’s previous comedic exploits, ‘Spaceman’ ventures into more profound and layered storytelling while retaining a touch of light-heartedness. The film promises to showcase a different facet of Sandler’s acting prowess, akin to his acclaimed roles in films like ‘Uncut Gems,’ ‘Punch Drunk Love’ and ‘Hustle.’

‘Spaceman’ is scheduled to premiere on OTT on 1st March 2024, as part of the streaming giant’s captivating 2024 film slate, alongside other highly anticipated titles like ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ and ‘The Old Guard 2.’

Sandler leads an impressive cast, including Carey Mulligan as Jakub’s pregnant wife, Lenka, and Paul Dano, who lends his unique voice to Hanuš, the enigmatic alien creature befriending Jakub. Kunal Nayyar, Isabella Rossellini, and Lena Olin round out the stellar ensemble.

In an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, director Johan Renck praised Sandler’s intelligence and work ethic, emphasizing the actor’s ability to deliver a performance unlike any other. Renck’s vision for Sandler’s character goes beyond the surface, delving into the discomfort of physically demanding scenes.

The heart of ‘Spaceman’ lies in the marriage of Jakub and Lenka, according to Renck. The film unfolds six months into Jakub’s solitary research mission to the edge of the solar system, revealing a poignant story of love and reconciliation with the help of an ancient being, Hanuš.

Behind the scenes, the creative force driving ‘Spaceman’ includes the accomplished cinematographer Jakob Ihre. Director Johan Renck, with his Emmy-winning pedigree, leads the project alongside screenwriter Colby Day. The film promises to be a visual and narrative spectacle, building on the success of Renck’s previous work.
