The Orators at the Heart of 'Speak.'
The five teenagers in the movie are incredibly expressive and varied, each with their own reasons and origins. Sam, a queer teen with a theatrical flair and a sharp sense of humor; Noor, who juggles her speech dreams with raising her disabled brother and advocating for disability rights; Noah, who navigates grief and autism with extraordinary emotional depth in his oration; Esther, the preacher's daughter and two-time national champion, who is vying for an unprecedented third title; and Mfaz, a Muslim American with a sizable TikTok following, who emerges as a formidable opponent.

Despite having a strong competitive bent, 'Speak.' goes beyond the genre by highlighting the humanity of the orators. Their families, coach-student relationships, and friendships give them emotional stability.
Sundance critics applauded the film's positivity and sensitivity, with The Hollywood Reporter praising its strong rooting-in and IndieWire pointing out how each student touches the viewer's heart. This documentary is about creating voices that can provide optimism to difficult times, not only about winning oration competitions.
