‘Spider-Man’ Producer Reveals What Will Never Happen in ‘Spider-Verse’ Movies

‘Spider-Verse’ remains a human-made marvel, as confirmed by its producer, who emphasises the importance of maintaining traditional animation techniques and improving working conditions for animators. The ‘Spider-Verse’ movies have revolutionised animation, showcasing a stunning blend of digital and hand-drawn styles that push creative boundaries and prove that animation is not just for children.

However, producer Chris Miller has taken a firm stance against the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the animation process, stating on social media that generative AI will never be part of the Spider-Verse toolbox. According to Miller, AI shortcuts creativity by stealing it from its rightful owners—humans.

Miller expressed his views on Twitter, saying, “There is no generative AI in Beyond the Spider-Verse, and there never will be. One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarised average of other artists’ work.”

Despite the visual success of the latest instalment, ‘Across the Spider-Verse,’ rumours have surfaced about dissatisfaction among animators regarding the production process. Several anonymous animators have spoken out, revealing that the working environment was marked by high stress and excessive workload pressure, driven by lofty expectations.

Adding to their grievances, some animators claimed they were offered low salaries with the promise of substantial overtime pay, which resulted in them being trapped in gruelling work schedules. This situation highlights the need for better working conditions and fair compensation in the animation industry.

Miller’s commitment to maintaining the human touch in animation and his advocacy for better working conditions underscore the importance of valuing creativity and the well-being of the artists who bring these visually stunning films to life.
