‘Succession’ Concludes Emmy Dominance With Best Drama Series Win

‘Succession’ wrapped up its journey with a victory in the category of outstanding drama series at the 2023 Emmy Awards. The show faced tough competition from ‘Andor’, ‘Better Call Saul’, ‘The Crown’, ‘House of the Dragon’, ‘The Last of Us’, ‘The White Lotus’ and ‘Yellowjackets’, all vying for the coveted prize.

Expressing gratitude upon receiving the award, series creator Jesse Armstrong acknowledged HBO and key individuals who supported the show’s inception, including Casey Bloys, Francesca Orsi, Nora Skinner, and Richard Plepler. He extended greetings to cast and crew members, specifically mentioning Jeremy Strong, currently working on a film, and Lucy Prebble, a co-executive producer and writer who recently became a parent.

Armstrong highlighted the pivotal role of Brian Cox, expressing thanks and noting the show’s focus on family dynamics and the intertwining of partisan news coverage with divisive right-wing politics. After four seasons of satire, he declared, “That’s a problem we have now fixed.”

In conclusion, Armstrong expressed deep gratitude and love for the experience of creating the show, stating, “We’ve loved making the show. Thank you very much indeed.”

In the concluding season of ‘Succession’, the death of Logan Roy (Brian Cox) marked a turning point, leaving the fate of the Roy family and the control of their company, Waystar Royco, uncertain. The series concluded with Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen) stepping into the role of the company’s new CEO.

Jesse Armstrong, the series creator, shared insights after the finale in May, stating that the idea of Tom becoming the eventual successor had been in his mind for quite some time. Despite Tom not being the most powerful figure, his influence comes from Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård). Armstrong emphasized the presence of figures like Tom, who navigate upwards and align themselves with influential individuals.
