Even though HBO's 'Succession' ended two years ago, its influence is still felt, particularly in comparison to the real-life saga that served as its inspiration. Both viewers and media analysts were moved by the fictional Roy family's turbulent struggle for control of Waystar Royco. A powerful universe where the echoes of real-life power battles are never far behind is created by the show's fierce feuds, scathing satire, and emotionally driven narrative.

A Mirror to the Murdochs

Succession's eerie resemblance to the internal turmoil of the Murdoch family is the main factor contributing to its cult appeal. Logan Roy, a brutal and strict patriarch, is very similar to Rupert Murdoch. The rivalry between Lachlan, James, and Elisabeth Murdoch in real life is reflected in his children's heated competition for succession.

Lachlan Murdoch's frequent arguments with his father regarding the family media company are reflected in Jeremy Strong's portrayal of Kendall Roy, the troubled eldest son and heir-apparent. Roman and Shiv's personas even resemble James and Elisabeth Murdoch, giving the Roys' made-up dysfunction a realistic feel.

Cult Appeal: Dialogue, Darkness and Unwavering Satire

'Succession' sharpened reality rather than merely imitating it. Its incisive prose, profoundly flawed characters, and unreserved depiction of ambition, vanity, and treachery made it a cult favourite. The dialogue is both black humour and blazing drama, and it crackles with wit and ferocity. The show transports viewers to a society where pursuing a legacy leads to emotional detachment and power triumphs over family.

What Keeps Fans Hooked Even After the Finale?

Beyond its storyline, Succession's lore flourishes in fan theories, cultural allusions, and social media analysis of its afterlife. It is nevertheless a warning story about corporate culture, riches, and broken families. Online forums are still sparked by discussions that draw comparisons between Roy family conflicts and Murdoch news stories. As one spectator put it, 'Succession' felt more like a psycho-thriller that exposed the sinister workings of narcissistic families than humour. Another admirer brought up the show's use of certain Murdoch incidents as inspiration, pointing out how the connections were horrifyingly explicit.

Critics hailed the show as a masterclass in modern television—winning multiple Emmys, Golden Globes, and even drawing comparisons to Shakespearean drama.

In just four seasons, 'Succession' redefined what prestige television could be. It fused biting humour with emotional intensity, and satire with reality. While the Roy's may be fictional, their world felt terrifyingly real—and that's why 'Succession' endures as one of the most influential dramas of our time.
