‘Superman’ by James Gunn Casts Beck Bennett in Key Role

Warner Bros. and DC Studios’ ‘Superman’ is currently filming in Atlanta, and the first DC film of the James Gunn era has added a new comedic talent to its cast. According to The Hollywood Reporter, former ‘Saturday Night Live’ cast member Beck Bennett has joined the film. While his exact role remains unclear, it is reported that Bennett will play a reporter at the Daily Planet, Superman’s in-universe newspaper.

Bennett will be part of a large ensemble cast bringing the story of Metropolis to life. David Corenswet stars as Superman/Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as the villainous Lex Luthor. Other DC comic characters appearing in the film include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner/Green Lantern, Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason/Metamorpho, María Gabriela de Faría as the Engineer, and Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific.

If Bennett is playing a reporter, he will be working at the Daily Planet alongside Wendell Pierce, who plays editor-in-chief Perry White.

Though the plot details of ‘Superman’ are still largely under wraps, it was reported in May that filming was about halfway complete, suggesting more information might be revealed soon. James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, is directing Superman from a script he wrote, marking the first film in the rebranded DC Universe. Gunn is also producing the film alongside Peter Safran, the other co-CEO of DC Studios.

Bennett’s role in ‘Superman’ continues his transition to film after becoming a standout on ‘Saturday Night Live’, where he was a cast member for eight seasons, often appearing in popular sketches with Kyle Mooney.

Bennett left SNL at the end of its 46th season in 2021. Since then, he has focused more on his film career, with roles in movies like ‘Zoolander 2’ and ‘Brigsby Bear’. In 2023, he voiced a character in the animated Netflix film ‘Nimona’ and recently appeared in Netflix’s Pop-Tarts comedy, ‘Unfrosted’, led by Jerry Seinfeld. He is also set to star in the Comedy Central film ‘Office Race’, but his part in ‘Superman’ may be his most prominent film role yet.

‘Superman’ is set to soar into theatres in July 2025. Episodes of SNL can be streamed on Peacock.
