Sydney Sweeney is showing no signs of slowing down. The Emmy-nominated actress is adding another significant title to her resume after gradually evolving from a breakout TV star to one of Hollywood's most sought-after leading women. Sweeney's decision to produce and star in a movie adaptation of Edith Wharton's beloved book 'The Custom of the Country' is a reflection of her increasing prominence both in front of and behind the camera.

In addition to being Sweeney's most ambitious producing endeavor to date, the project puts her at the center of a potent literary tale about ambition, class, and social climbing.

From Rising Star to Producer: Sydney Sweeney's Career Momentum

Sydney Sweeney has built an incredible career over the last few years by striking a balance between mainstream success and highly regarded performances. She originally became well-known for her role in 'Euphoria' and 'The White Lotus,' where she was nominated for an Emmy and established herself as a serious dramatic actor. Her latest performance in 'The Housemaid,' which was a huge commercial and critical hit, solidified her reputation as a bankable star who can handle intricate storylines.

That film, often cited as a turning point in her career, demonstrated her ability to anchor emotionally demanding material and connect with audiences on a large scale. With 'The Custom of the Country,' Sweeney is taking her evolution a step further by serving as a producer through her company, Fifty-Fifty Films. Her increasing drive to mold the stories she tells and the characters she plays is evident in this action.

Industry insiders note that Sweeney has become increasingly selective, choosing projects that offer depth, agency, and creative control. By guiding projects from development to screen, she is joining a new generation of performers who are actively reinventing their roles in Hollywood.

Inside 'The Custom of the Country'

'The Custom of the Country,' which is based on Edith Wharton's 1913 novel, centers on Undine Spragg, a highly ambitious young woman who will stop at nothing to ascend New York's strict social ladder. During America's Gilded Age, the narrative examines themes of wealth, marriage, ambition, and social dominance. Sweeney will portray Undine, a character that calls for charm, brutality, and emotional nuance—qualities that strongly correspond with the actress’ most recent roles.

The adaptation is expected to modernize the storytelling while remaining faithful to Wharton's sharp social critique. With a significant emphasis on character and historical accuracy, the movie is being created as a prestige feature. The project's creative team is apparently putting together a well-known supporting cast, however further casting announcements are still to come.

According to production schedules, filming may start later this year, with a possible release date of late 2026 or early 2027, depending on scheduling. For Sweeney, 'The Custom of the Country' is more than just another acting part; it's a turning point in her career as she boldly assumes the roles of leading lady, producer, and storyteller all at once.
