Director Matt Reeves has officially confirmed several major new additions to the cast of 'The Batman: Part II,' further expanding the dark and gritty Gotham universe led by Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne. Among the biggest names joining the sequel are Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan and Charles Dance, ending months of rumours and fan speculation surrounding the highly anticipated DC project.
The casting confirmations were revealed through a series of cryptic social media posts by Reeves, who has slowly been unveiling both returning and new cast members ahead of production. The sequel is currently scheduled for theatrical release on 1st October, 2027.
Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan Join Gotham
Reports suggest Scarlett Johansson is expected to play Gilda Dent, the wife of Harvey Dent, while Sebastian Stan has reportedly been cast as Gotham's district attorney Harvey Dent, the character who eventually becomes the iconic villain Two-Face in DC comics. Although Warner Bros. has not officially revealed detailed character descriptions yet, fans quickly connected the casting choices to the classic Batman storyline The Long Halloween, which heavily features Harvey and Gilda Dent alongside Gotham's criminal underworld.

Meanwhile, veteran actor Charles Dance is reportedly set to portray Christopher Dent, Harvey Dent's father. The role is expected to add a deeper emotional and psychological layer to Harvey's transformation storyline. The casting also marks an interesting crossover moment for superhero cinema, as both Johansson and Stan are globally recognised for their Marvel Cinematic Universe roles as Black Widow and Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier respectively.
Returning Gotham Characters Officially Confirmed
Alongside the new additions, Reeves has confirmed the return of several familiar faces from the first film. Robert Pattinson will reprise his role as Batman, with Jeffrey Wright returning as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, also known as Penguin. Jayme Lawson will also return as Mayor Bella Reál, while Gil Perez-Abraham reprises his role as Officer Martinez. Sources further suggest that Barry Keoghan may return as Joker, although Reeves has not officially confirmed his involvement yet.
The filmmaker recently teased that the sequel will place a stronger focus on Bruce Wayne himself rather than only Batman's vigilante identity. Reeves explained that while the first film largely explored Batman's emergence, the sequel will dig deeper into the man beneath the mask. Production on the sequel is reportedly already underway in the United Kingdom.

Reeves recently fueled fan excitement after posting an image teasing a snowy Gotham setting with the caption "#SnowTires," seemingly confirming long-running rumours that the sequel will take place during winter. Fans online have reacted enthusiastically to the expanding cast, with many praising the film's ensemble lineup and speculating about possible comic-inspired storylines. Discussions across Reddit and fan forums have heavily focused on whether Reeves may adapt elements from The Long Halloween or introduce a more politically charged Gotham centred around Harvey Dent's tragic arc.
One of DC's Most Anticipated Sequels
Released in 2022, 'The Batman' became both a critical and commercial success, earning praise for its noir-inspired storytelling, grounded detective tone and Pattinson's darker interpretation of the Caped Crusader. The film grossed more than USD 770 million worldwide and also led to HBO's successful spin-off series 'The Penguin.' With an expanding ensemble cast, a colder Gotham setting and deeper focus on Bruce Wayne's emotional journey, 'The Batman: Part II' is already shaping up to be one of the most anticipated superhero films of the coming years.
