‘The Idea of You’: Anne Hathaway Says The Film is Not Related to Harry Styles

Anne Hathaway is hitting back at rumours linking her new rom-com, ‘The Idea of You,’ to Harry Styles. Based on Robinne Lee’s novel of the same name, the film adaptation has sparked comparisons to Styles due to its storyline involving a romance between an older woman and a younger pop star.

During an interview with Extra, Hathaway denied any connection between ‘The Idea of You’ and Styles, particularly amid his relationship with Olivia Wilde. “No, just no,” Hathaway remarked when asked about the comparisons.

The actress shed light on the film’s premise, describing it as a story about recovering from a broken heart. Her character, Solène Marchand, is portrayed as a divorced mother grappling with the aftermath of a painful breakup. Hathaway explained that Solène questions whether she was ever truly loved after her husband’s betrayal, leading to a journey of self-discovery.

Describing Solène as a “former people pleaser,” Hathaway highlighted her character’s resilience in the face of adversity. Solène, portrayed as a dedicated mother and businesswoman, embarks on a journey to reclaim her identity and rediscover her worth.

While Lee’s novel drew inspiration from Styles, Hathaway emphasized that ‘The Idea of You’ was never intended as a story solely about the pop star. Lee herself clarified in a 2020 interview with Vogue that the book aimed to explore themes of female empowerment and self-discovery.

Nicholas Galitzine, Hathaway’s on-screen love interest, echoed similar sentiments, stating that while the character of Hayes Campbell drew inspiration from Styles, he is portrayed as a distinct character in his own right. Galitzine emphasised the importance of crafting a character that stands apart from Styles, despite the inevitable comparisons.

Hathaway also praised Galitzine’s musical talents, revealing that he performed his vocals for the film. She commended his audition, noting his confidence and authenticity in bringing the character of Hayes to life.
