‘The Last Of Us Part 2’ Almost Had a Darker Ending

In the latest developer commentary for 'The Last Of Us Part 2' Remastered, the curtain has been lifted on an alternative ending that never made it to the final cut. Halley Gross, the narrative lead, and Neil Druckmann, the game director, spilled the beans on a different fate for one character that could have significantly altered the game's conclusion.

In this alternate scenario, during the third day in Seattle, the title would have taken a darker turn by bringing an end to Lev, the child Abby encounters in her journey, simultaneously with his sister, Yara. This twist would have undoubtedly left players with a more sombre impression.

The original conclusion of 'The Last Of Us Part 2' showed Ellie, the protagonist, seeking retribution for the death of Joel, her father figure, at the hands of Abby. However, in the final version, Ellie makes a surprising choice, opting to spare Abby to break the vicious cycle of violence and revenge.

As the story unfolds in the ultimate ending, Ellie returns to her farm in Jackson, only to encounter a stranger seeking vengeance for the loss of their child at Ellie's hands. A confrontation ensues, resulting in Ellie losing two fingers in the skirmish—an alteration from the initial plan where Abby was scripted to bite off Ellie's fingers in a dramatic climax.
