The Original ‘Nightmare on Elm Street’ Finally Arrives in 4K

Many horror classics have already been upgraded to 4K, including ‘Halloween,’ ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.’ However, Freddy Krueger and ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ have yet to leap—until now. It appears that 2024 will finally be the year this iconic slasher hits 4K.

According to Bloody Disgusting, the original Wes Craven-directed film will be released in 4K via a steel book edition sometime this year. While Warner Brothers has not officially announced it yet, there is a tentative release date of 31st December 2024.

This new edition will be packed with special features, including ‘Ready Freddy Focus Points,’ two commentary tracks featuring Wes Craven, Heather Langenkamp, John Saxon, and Robert Englund, alternate endings, three previously released featurettes, and an interactive trivia track.

The steel book will also include physical items such as a double-sided poster, art cards, and a booklet. The catch is that this release will initially be available in the UK, but since 4K discs are region-free, a US release is likely once Warner Brothers makes an official announcement.

When ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ premiered in the fall of 1984, Freddy Krueger quickly became a household name in horror, propelling Wes Craven into mainstream success. The term “Freddy-Mania” emerged as the character became a merchandising powerhouse, appearing on t-shirts, lunch boxes, and video games throughout the 80s.

The film’s success led to five sequels through the early 90s, with some entries, like ‘Dream Warriors,’ being particularly beloved. However, none compare to the original, renowned for its gruesome kills, legendary performances, and Craven’s signature atmosphere.

Freddy Krueger hasn’t appeared on the big screen since the 2010 remake. The 40th anniversary and upcoming 4K release could reignite interest in a potential reboot of the Elm Street franchise. While fans await more details on the official release, pre-orders for the 4K steel book are available on Amazon UK. Additionally, the film is currently streaming on Netflix as part of the platform’s 1984 anniversary collection.
