The Reason Behind Joaquin Phoenix's Exit from 'Doctor Strange’

Back when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was at its peak during ‘Phase 3’, Marvel Studios sought an actor who could embody ‘Doctor Strange’, one of the franchise's most beloved superheroes. Joaquin Phoenix, fresh off his Oscar win for ‘Joker: Folie à Deux,’ initially seemed like the perfect fit for the role.

However, in an interview with SlashFilm, ‘Doctor Strange’ director Scott Derrickson shed light on Phoenix's departure and the subsequent casting of Benedict Cumberbatch.

Derrickson confessed that while he was enthusiastic about Phoenix, he had always envisioned Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme. However, Cumberbatch's scheduling conflicts posed a challenge. Despite Phoenix's interest in the role, he hesitated to commit to a multi-movie contract with Disney, a factor that contributed to his eventual exit.

Even though Phoenix met with Derrickson and expressed genuine interest in the character, Derrickson began to realize that Phoenix's distinctive acting style and career goals might not align with the MCU. After spending extensive time together, both Derrickson and Phoenix mutually agreed that it might not be the best fit.

Phoenix's artistic inclinations, as evidenced by his portrayal of ‘Joker’, suggested a desire for creative freedom and exploration within a role, possibly diverging from the constraints of superhero canon. Ultimately, Derrickson successfully advocated for rescheduling to accommodate Cumberbatch, a decision that proved beneficial for the film's production and reception.
