Timothée Chalamet Thought He Would Play a Bigger Role in ‘Interstellar’

Timothée Chalamet might be a superstar now, but he didn’t have the smoothest start in Hollywood. The French-American actor recently shared his candid thoughts about his debut in the blockbuster movie ‘Interstellar’ back in 2014, directed by none other than Christopher Nolan. Surprisingly, Chalamet admitted that his initial experience with the film left him feeling disheartened.

In a revealing conversation with Emma Stone during Variety’s ‘Actors on Actors’ segment in 2018, the now 28-year-old actor opened up about his disappointment with his role as Tom Cooper in ‘Interstellar.’ Despite having high hopes for his part in the star-studded film, Chalamet confessed that reality hit him hard when he watched the movie for the first time in an IMAX theatre alongside Nolan and the rest of the cast.

Describing the surreal experience of watching the film with such esteemed company, Chalamet recalled feeling like a bit of an imposter in the room due to his relatively new career status. However, his excitement quickly turned to disappointment as he realised that his role wasn’t as significant as he had anticipated. The young actor couldn’t help but feel overshadowed, leading to an emotional moment when he returned home with his dad and shed tears for an hour.

Chalamet candidly expressed his frustration, particularly regarding an emotional monologue he had filmed that focused more on Matthew McConaughey’s character than on his own. Despite his disappointment, ‘Interstellar’ proved to be a massive success both commercially and critically, marking a promising start for Chalamet’s career.

In the film, Chalamet portrayed young Tom Cooper, the son of Joseph Cooper, played by McConaughey. Their complex relationship forms a central part of the movie’s narrative, exploring themes of abandonment and duty against the backdrop of interstellar travel and time dilation.

Through Tom and Joseph’s dynamic, Nolan delves into the intricate balance between family ties and the greater good, setting the stage for Chalamet’s journey as an actor in Hollywood.
