Tom Hiddleston, widely known for his dramatic roles and as Marvel’s Loki, embraces a new challenge by showcasing his dancing abilities in the forthcoming film ‘The Life of Chuck’. The movie, which won the audience award at TIFF last year, is based on a Stephen King novella and follows three stages in the life of Charles Krantz—partly portrayed by Hiddleston—whose death coincides with the end of the world. In a recent interview at the film’s Los Angeles premiere, Hiddleston shared that he had never danced in this way before and invested considerable effort in learning the steps and techniques needed for the role.

Hiddleston expressed his admiration for movie musicals, mentioning classics such as ‘Swing Time’, ‘Singin’ in the Rain’, and ‘Cover Girl’. He also referenced memorable dance moments in films like ‘Dirty Dancing’ with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, ‘The Mask’ with Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz, ‘500 Days of Summer’ starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and ‘Little Miss Sunshine’, noting that dance is an intrinsic part of cinema’s storytelling. When asked if he would consider starring in a musical, he joked that although no offers have come his way yet, he remains open to the idea.

Co-star Karen Gillan commented that she had seen Hiddleston dance before but was blown away by his performance in the movie. Director Mike Flanagan shared that Tom Hiddleston’s dancing helped land him the role—not for technical skill, but for the pure joy and happiness he radiated during a late-night show performance, which Flanagan felt captured the exact tone the film needed.

‘The Life of Chuck’: A Hopeful Departure from Traditional Horror

The film itself represents a departure from the typical horror themes associated with both King and Flanagan. The director described Stephen King as an optimistic humanist at heart, whose underlying positivity remains evident even in darker narratives. Flanagan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work on this project, believing it captures the true essence of King’s storytelling. He added that the film brought him hope and comfort during the pandemic and that it remains especially relevant now, offering love, optimism, and solace in challenging times.

‘The Life of Chuck’ is set to release in cinemas this Friday.
