Tommy Shelby’s Return in ‘Peaky Blinders’ Film Starring Cillian Murphy Confirmed

It’s time to grab your tweed jackets and flat caps because ‘Peaky Blinders’ is returning. Cillian Murphy is set to return as Birmingham gangster Tommy Shelby in an upcoming Netflix movie, co-produced with BBC Film.

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me,” Murphy shared with Netflix. “It’s very gratifying to collaborate again with Steven Knight and Tom Harper on the film version of Peaky Blinders. This one’s for the fans.”

Scheduled to begin production later this year, the film will continue the epic narrative of the multi-award-winning series that spanned six seasons. Set between 1919 and 1934 in Birmingham, ‘Peaky Blinders’ chronicled the rise and fall of the Shelby family amidst dramatic social, economic, and political upheavals.

Harper, who directed episodes in the show’s first season back in 2013, will helm the new film, working from a script by ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Knight. “When I first directed ‘Peaky Blinders’ over 10 years ago, we had no idea what the series would become, but we sensed something explosive in the cast and writing,” Harper reflected. “Peaky has always been about family, and it’s incredibly exciting to reunite with Steve and Cillian to bring the movie to audiences worldwide on Netflix.”

Since the series concluded in 2022, Peaky Blinders’ influence has persisted, inspiring a menswear fashion trend and motivating actors like One Day’s Leo Woodall. “I was watching ‘Peaky Blinders’, put on my Peaky Blinders-style hat, did my Tommy Shelby impression, and thought, ‘I want to be an actor,’” Woodall told Netflix.

The Season 6 finale left Tommy Shelby riding off on a white horse, ready to start a new life. The new movie’s plot remains under wraps, but Knight hinted at explosive developments for the Shelby clan. “I’m genuinely thrilled that this movie is about to happen,” Knight said. “It will be an explosive chapter in the ‘Peaky Blinders’ story. No holds barred. Full-on ‘Peaky Blinders’ at war.”
