‘Twisters’ 2024: Everything You Need to Know

With its stormy spectacle, ‘Twisters’ is about to captivate audiences. Acting as a sort of backstory for the 1996 hit movie ‘Twister’, star Glen Powell told Vogue that the new movie will tell a new story that takes place in the present. Powell remarked on the film's lasting influence on audiences despite the lapse in conversation about the original production, recalling how it both excited and frightened them in their early years.

Powell emphasized the significance of universal appeal in large-scale productions, citing the elemental conflict between humanity and nature as a theme that resonates globally, drawing on advice from his colleague Tom Cruise on ‘Top Gun: Maverick’.

Director Lee Isaac Chung emphasized that the goal of the new film is to evoke the same sense of adventure rather than just being another disaster movie, even though it will have the same adrenaline-fueled atmosphere and central tornadoes as its predecessor. ‘Twisters’, which avoids any direct continuation from the original plot and instead introduces a new cast of characters, keeps its focus on tornadoes and is written by Mark L. Smith and Chung himself.

Powell plays Tyler Owens in this version, a social media star known as the ‘Tornado Wrangler,’ and Daisy Edgar-Jones plays Kate Cooper, a cautious storm tracker who is convinced to go on a storm-chasing trip in Oklahoma by her friend Javi, who is portrayed by Anthony Ramos. Drama and excitement abound due to the conflicting storm-chasing strategies of Tyler and Kate as well as the tornadoes' unrelenting wrath.

Powell expressed his excitement for the final product and praised the level of talent involved in the project, full of anticipation. The film attempts to authentically capture the diverse backgrounds of actual storm chasers, providing viewers with an immersive experience, with a diverse ensemble cast handpicked by Chung.

The sequel's path to the big screen wasn't without difficulties, though. Helen Hunt led the charge on a proposal for a diverse sequel, but as she disclosed on Watch What Happens Live!, the project was unable to gain momentum. However, the excitement surrounding ‘Twisters’ escalated when its first trailer, which featured suspenseful scenes of danger and devastation, was released during the 2024 Super Bowl.
