University of Melbourne to Hold Two-Day Academic Conference on Taylor Swift

The University of Melbourne pulled out all the stops for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concerts in the city by hosting the ‘Swiftposium,’ a two-day academic conference delving into the life and career of the pop sensation. Held on the university’s campus from 11th February to 13th February, the event aimed to provide a platform for scholars to dissect Swift’s influence and its far-reaching effects on various aspects of society.

Dubbed “a hybrid academic conference for scholars to engage in critical dialogue about Swift’s popularity and its profound implications for a range of issues,” the Swiftposium attracted significant attention. A whopping 400 academic papers poured in from 78 universities worldwide. Out of these submissions, 130 papers made the cut, covering a diverse array of disciplines such as gender studies, musicology, economics, urban planning and medicine.

During the conference, attendees tackled a wide spectrum of topics, including Swift’s infamous feud with Kanye West, the feminist themes woven into her lyrics, the surprising use of her songs for cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and her ongoing battle against graphic deepfake images. Adding academic gravitas to the proceedings, Dr Georgia Carroll delivered a keynote address, drawing from her 2023 thesis on fandom communities similar to Swift’s devoted following.

Reflecting on the event, Hannah McCann, a senior lecturer in cultural studies and one of the Swiftposium organizers, took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her excitement, stating, “Academics from all over the world [are] applying their expertise and critical lens to this crazy phenomenon.”

While the conference was exclusively for academics, nearby RMIT University played host to a ‘Fanposium’ on 11th February, offering fans and the general public a chance to engage in related events.

The timing of the conference couldn’t have been more opportune, aligning with the Australian leg of Swift’s Eras Tour. The tour commenced with a triumphant three-night stint at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from 16th February onwards. Anticipation ran high as these shows were expected to attract Swift’s largest crowds yet. Following the Melbourne concerts, Swift’s tour journeyed to Sydney for four more performances, concluding the Aussie leg with a bang at Accor Stadium on 26th February.
