Usher Explains Why He Fasts on Wednesdays And Shares His Morning ‘Concoction’ Recipe

The R&B icon recently shared how he prepares physically and mentally for his jam-packed life in an interview. Most days, Usher begins with a “moment of reflection.” The eight-time Grammy-winning artist varies his routine, either reading a book to “stimulate my mind,” meditating, or practising yoga.

“It really does help to activate my organs and get my mind moving in the right direction,” he said.

Unlike many, his mornings don’t usually start with coffee. “It all depends on how I ended my night before. Sometimes a coffee martini is appropriate,” joked Usher, who will soon receive the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the BET Awards.

Typically, Usher wakes up and drinks celery juice. He has been mixing a concoction of lemon, ginger, water, and cayenne pepper, which he drinks hot. For breakfast, he often chooses eggs scrambled with cheese, but only after engaging in physical activity.

“I don’t like to eat breakfast before I’ve worked out or done something physical: taking a walk, stretching or doing yoga, sitting in the sun and raising my body’s natural heat levels. Then I eat,” he explained. However, on Wednesdays, Usher follows a different routine and doesn’t eat anything at all.

“I fast, not for religious purposes, but it’s something my grandmother practised,” he said. “I typically try to start around 11 p.m. the previous day, then go the entire day on Wednesday just drinking water.” Recently, Usher and his wife, Jennifer Goicoechea Raymond, celebrated his achievements at the Apollo Spring Benefit, where he was honoured with the Icon Award.

During his acceptance speech, Usher expressed gratitude to those who have supported him, giving a special shoutout to his wife. “Last and most certainly not least, without your love, passion, and support to my best friend, Jennifer Raymond. I love you, baby,” he said. “My wife, who is in the audience tonight. Thank you for your support, and I’m so happy that we could do this together.”
