Was There Hidden Meaning Behind Margot Robbie and America Ferrera’s Gowns at The 2024 Oscars?

The ‘Barbie’ cast laid the standards for method dressing, embodying the iconic characters of Barbie and Ken with their fashion choices. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, in particular, have consistently stunned at press events, premieres and award shows, donning outfits straight from Barbie and Ken’s dollhouse closets.

However, at the 2024 Oscars, where the summer blockbuster received nine nominations, including ‘Best Picture,’ Robbie seemed to pass the pink torch to her co-star America Ferrera. Robbie opted for a striking black gown, while Ferrera arrived in shimmering hot pink. Despite their contrasting colours and moods, both dresses, courtesy of Versace, appeared to be made from the same chainmail material, subtly linking them to that of ‘Barbie’ director Greta Gerwig’s sparkling Gucci gown.

This swap of colours sparked a theory that has fans praising the marketing team.

What is the Theory?

Throughout the whole ‘Barbie’ premiere, press tours and award season, Margot Robbie stunned in recreations of the Barbie doll outfits. From the ‘Superstar’ Barbie to the ‘Enchanted Evening’ Barbie, Robbie wore it all. The eye-catching pink was the centre of attention and rightfully so.

America Ferrera, however, donned darker colours on the red carpet. From browns to beiges, Ferrera strayed away from the spotlight, because it was never on her. Margot Robbie and ‘Barbie’ achieved nominations at the SAG Awards, Bafta Awards and Golden Globe Awards but Margot Robbie was snubbed of an Oscar nomination while America received a nod in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Now, at the 2024 Oscars, America Ferrera turned heads in a gel chainmail pink dress. By swapping the pink and black, Margot let her co-star be the centre of attention because it was Ferrera’s night, not Robbie’s.

While Ferrera didn’t clinch the ‘Best Supporting Actress’ award (which went to Da’Vine Joy Randolph for ‘The Holdovers’), her outfit embodied the spirit of her character’s feminist monologue, reflecting on the societal standards that women have to navigate.
