In the latest Netflix limited series, 'Ripley,' a teaser has just hit the screens, offering a glimpse into the world of Patricia Highsmith's iconic character from 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' books. Stepping into the titular role is none other than Andrew Scott, celebrated for his roles in 'Sherlock' and 'Fleabag.'

This marks the first on-screen adaptation of Highsmith's novels since the 1999 film featuring Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow.

The monochromatic teaser, though not divulging much, hints that the series will closely follow the narrative of the initial book, mirroring the 1999 movie's trajectory. Tom Ripley, commissioned by affluent businessman Herbert Greenleaf, finds himself dispatched to New York to retrieve Greenleaf's son, Dickie.

However, once immersed in the opulent lifestyle of Dickie Greenleaf, Ripley becomes ensnared in a tale of deception and crime.

This psychological thriller promises a more in-depth exploration of Ripley's psyche and adventures compared to its cinematic predecessor. Set against the backdrop of the 1960s, the series unfolds as a stylized period drama and an enthralling thriller rolled into one. Andrew Scott seems poised to captivate audiences once again with his portrayal.

Cast and Release Date

As for the cast, the limited series boasts a stellar lineup. Andrew Scott, generating Oscar buzz for his performance in 'All of Us Strangers,' takes on the enigmatic role of Ripley. Joining him is Johnny Flynn, known for his work in 'Lovesick,' portraying Dickie Greenleaf and Dakota Fanning, of 'Twilight' and 'The Runaways' fame, stepping into the shoes of Margaret Sherwood.

Pasquale Espocito and Franco Silvestri round out the ensemble.

Set to premiere on Netflix on 4th April 2024, 'Ripley' comprises eight episodes and is a production that not only Steve Zaillian's prowess as a writer and director but also his executive-producing talents. Zaillian, an Academy Award winner for 'Schindler's List' and with notable Oscar nominations for films such as 'The Irishman,' 'Awakenings,' 'Moneyball' and' The Gangs of New York,' spearheads the creative team.

Scott, serving as an executive producer himself, candidly shared with Vanity Fair that the role of Ripley proved to be "mentally and physically really hard. That’s just the truth of it."
