Will Smith is reconnecting with his roots after uncovering a surprising link to his Welsh ancestry. While promoting his new album, 'Based on a True Story' on BBC Radio Wales, the Hollywood star and rapper shared a lighthearted exchange with host Lucy Owen, who revealed a deep connection between his Pennsylvania hometown and Wales.
Smith, 56, discovered his Wynnefield neighbourhood is named after Welsh doctor Thomas Wynne—leading to a funny, proud moment as he joked about having Welsh roots. Will Smith even joked that he might adopt a new moniker to reflect his heritage, saying he might start calling himself "Welsh Smith."

The Welsh connections didn’t stop there. Owen also pointed out that Bryn Mawr, the town where Smith’s mother resides, translates from Welsh to "big hill." Smith couldn’t help but laugh at the coincidence, joking, “Big Will lives in Big Hill,” clearly enjoying the fun twist of fate.

Currently touring his first studio album in nearly two decades, Will Smith is bringing 'Based on a True Story' to audiences around the globe. The international tour began on June 25th in Rabat, Morocco, and will include five shows across the U.K. between August 24th and August 30th— including a special stop in Cardiff, Wales, on August 25th.
Adding to the significance of his U.K. performances, Will Smith reflected on his early music career with DJ Jazzy Jeff. He shared that their debut album was partially recorded in the U.K., where their label, Jive Records, was originally based. To Smith, this tour feels like a true return to where it all began.

In recent months, Smith has leaned more into his music than acting, with 'Based on a True Story' marking his return to the studio since 2005’s 'Lost and Found'. His last film appearance was in 2024’s 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die', and fans can expect to see him next in the highly anticipated sequel to 'I Am Legend', alongside Michael B. Jordan.
As he explores both new music and his family heritage, Will Smith continues to captivate audiences — whether through his lyrics, his legacy, or his unexpected ties to Wales.
