Will There be a ‘Despicable Me 5’? Here’s What The Director Has to Say

‘Despicable Me 4’ hit theatres on Wednesday, and fans are thrilled about the latest addition to the beloved franchise. With this fourth instalment, the ‘Despicable Me’ series now boasts the original film from 2010, three sequels, and two prequels, solidifying its place as one of the most successful animated movie series.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Chris Renaud, the director of ‘Despicable Me 4,’ discussed the future of the franchise. According to Renaud, there’s no intention of stopping anytime soon. He shared that the stories centred around the characters are very relatable to everyday human experiences, which keeps the franchise fresh and engaging. Renaud and his team are looking as far as 50 years into the future and still see plenty of opportunities to create cinematic magic.

“The world of the characters lends itself to multiple stories because they’re human; they’re very relatable,” Renaud said. He explained that having human characters allows for a broader range of stories compared to animals or mystical creatures, which can be more limiting. Renaud, who co-directed the first two films and served as an executive producer for the third, noted that the franchise has evolved significantly since its inception. He likened its growth to that of ‘The Simpsons,’ which has thrived for decades.

‘Despicable Me 4’ has been one of the most anticipated films of the year. Fans are eager to see the return of the minions and the supervillain Gru. The film’s plot introduces a new character, Gru Jr., who is determined to make his dad’s life difficult. However, their relatively peaceful life is disrupted when the criminal mastermind Maxime Le Mal escapes from prison, seeking revenge against Gru.
