Zack Snyder Reacts to Negative ‘Rebel Moon’ Reviews: “Such Visceral Responses”

Zack Snyder has responded to the wave of negative reviews surrounding his Netflix sci-fi extravaganza, ‘Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire,’ admitting his bewilderment at the harsh criticism.

In a recent interview with Empire, the writer-director shared his surprise at the critical reception of the film. Despite being labelled a “disaster” and holding a meagre 21 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes, Snyder expressed his perplexity, stating, “I don’t really have a rebuttal to the reviews.”

Snyder noted the polarising nature of reactions to his movies throughout his career, suggesting that the vehement responses were unexpected given the content of ‘Rebel Moon.’ Originally conceived as a Star Wars project, the film stars Sofia Boutella as a former soldier rallying warriors from nearby planets to combat the evil Imperium threatening her farming colony.

While Snyder remained unperturbed by the negative feedback, Boutella admitted feeling deeply affected by the criticisms. Speaking to Vulture, she revealed the emotional toll of witnessing the project face severe backlash. “It really affected me for all of those who put so much heart, tears and sweat into this project,” she said.

Despite the setbacks, ‘Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver’ is set to premiere on Netflix in April. Additionally, Snyder plans to release R-rated director’s cuts of each instalment at a later date, promising heightened levels of gore, nudity and violence.
