Why Al Pacino Donates His ‘Cruising’ Earnings to Charity

Al Pacino’s decision to donate his entire salary from the film ‘Cruising’ underscores his commitment to supporting the homophile community. Anticipating that the film, which has faced criticism for its portrayal of the individuals, would not be well-received in the future, Pacino chose to ensure that his earnings would contribute positively to society. 

In his memoir, ‘Sonny Boy’, he reflected on the exploitative nature of the film and his desire to make amends by donating to various charities.From the outset, Pacino took on the role in ‘Cruising’ with a clear motive to push boundaries.

However, the film quickly generated controversy, particularly during its production, sparking daily protests due to its perceived negative portrayal of the community. Pacino’s concerns about the film’s impact led him to establish a trust that would fund humanitarian efforts aimed at supporting the initiatives.

In his memoir, Pacino acknowledged the ethical dilemma he faced regarding his involvement in a project that many viewed as damaging to the community. Despite feeling that this decision might not provide complete closure, he found solace in the knowledge that the funds would be used for a worthy cause.

He expressed his commitment to ensuring that the financial proceeds from ‘Cruising’ would serve to uplift and support those affected by the issues highlighted in the film.

“I took the money, and it was a lot, and I put it in an irrevocable trust fund,” Pacino wrote. “I gave it to charities, and with the interest, it was able to last a couple of decades.” His actions demonstrate a deep sense of responsibility and a dedication to making a positive impact, transforming a controversial legacy into a source of support for the community.
