Why Did You Say That, Taylor?

Master songstress Taylor Swift just sat down to clear the air about her latest hit “Lover”.

The romantic country-pop ballad has become a familiar tune to us all in the months since its release. With its sweet, melodic riffs and its unusual but warm lyrics, the song stole everyone’s hearts at first listen. The track makes tonnes of references to (and this is just an assumption) Swift’s most recent, and seemingly most serious relationship with beau Joe Alwyn. It offers the closest look to her relationship since they started dating, as the couple have been extremely private about the whole thing.

In a recent interview, T-Swift took to describing her songwriting process when producing the song. She talks about how the song had to say exactly what she meant to say and for that reason, she went over each and every line to make sure her true intent came through.

Upon release of the song, fans fell in love instantly, but one line in particular stood out; the opening line – “We can leave the Christmas lights up until January” had everyone wondering – “that’s the most normal thing. Why would you say that Taylor?” Well, that was the point. Swift wanted to emphasise the normal things, considering how heavy and existential some of the other lines in the song were.

“I wanted the chorus to be these really simple, existential questions that we ask ourselves when we’re in love. ‘Can I go where you go’ is such a heavy thing to ask somebody. ‘Can we always be this close’ has so much fear in it,” she said about the process. She further explained – “It’s about how mundane it is. It’s about like ‘We could put a rug over there. We could do wallpaper or paint.’ When young adults go from living in their family to then combining their lives with someone else, that’s actually, like, the most profound thing.”
