Why Harry Potter’s Director Praised Maggie Smith as Perfect For Her Role

Daniel Radcliffe and his ‘Harry Potter ‘co-stars are paying tribute to the late Maggie Smith, celebrating her enchanting portrayal of Professor Minerva McGonagall in the iconic film series. Radcliffe, who portrayed the titular character, expressed his admiration for Smith as a “fierce intellect” and “legend” in a heartfelt statement shared.

Reflecting on their first encounter, Radcliffe recalled meeting Smith when he was just nine years old during a reading for ‘David Copperfield’, his first acting job.

He remembered his parents’ awe at the prospect of working with her and shared a humorous anecdote about asking if he should call her “Dame.” Smith’s laughter and her warm response—“don’t be ridiculous!”—immediately put him at ease.

Radcliffe noted how kind Smith was throughout their time together on set. “She was incredibly kind to me on that shoot, and then I was lucky enough to go on working with her for another 10 years on the ‘Harry Potter’ films,” he said. He praised her sharp wit and ability to charm and intimidate simultaneously, calling her “extremely funny” and highlighting her unique presence.

In closing, Radcliffe expressed his gratitude, stating, “The word legend is overused, but if it applies to anyone in our industry, then it applies to her. Thank you, Maggie.” Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger, also shared her thoughts on Smith via Instagram Stories, reflecting on how her understanding of Smith’s legendary status evolved over time.

Watson wrote, “When I was younger, I had no idea of Maggie’s legend—the woman I was fortunate enough to share space with.” She described Smith as “real, honest, funny, and self-honouring,” acknowledging her strength in a male-dominated environment. Watson concluded her tribute with heartfelt gratitude, saying, “Thank you for all of your kindness. I’ll miss you.”
