‘Wicked’ Director Says ‘Long Road Ahead’ for Britney Spears Biopic
According to reports in August 2023, Britney Spears and Jon M. Chu, the director of ‘Wicked’, were working on a biopic based on her novel, ‘The Woman in Me’. Sharing the announcement on social media, Spears said she was working on a “secret project” with producer Marc Platt, who she said was behind some of her favourite movies. Chu did, however, affirm in November that the movie was still in its early phases of development and that no screenwriter had yet been hired.
Chu gave a fresh update at the 2025 Golden Globes, saying he admired Britney and wanted to convey her tale honestly. It would be a “long road ahead” to make the movie a reality, he said, acknowledging that the idea was still in its early stages and would require time.

Chu also explained in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that, even though the biography is still in its early stages, Spears would be actively involved in its production. Although he had some ideas for the movie, he acknowledged that a lot of the preparation was still in the works.
Spears caused confusion in September 2023 when she alluded to the possibility that her “secret project” might be a “fictional musical” rather than a biography. Chu reacted to these remarks by implying that Spears likes to tease her fans and keep some things a mystery. Despite any uncertainty regarding the project’s course, he conveyed his enthusiasm about collaborating with her.

In its first week of release, Spears’ memoir ‘The Woman in Me’ sold a million copies globally and more than 2.5 million copies in the United States. The audiobook, which was introduced by Spears and narrated by Michelle Williams, became the fastest-selling audiobook in Simon & Schuster’s history. She discloses an abortion she had while dating Justin Timberlake, among other intimate discoveries in the novel.
