Zoe Saldaña Reveals ‘Emilia Perez’ Hair-Ripping Scene Was Her Idea

Zoe Saldaña stated that she was solely responsible for the hair-pulling incident in Emilia Pérez. During an interview with Kate Winslet for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, the actress described a dramatic sequence in the movie where her character, Rita Mora Castro, performs in a vibrant ballroom and tears a piece of a woman’s hair extension.

According to Saldaña, her character’s need to touch the woman and her intense obsession with her served as her drive. At first, the crew was hesitant because they were worried that the background actress might have to sign a form, but she was amenable to it. Saldaña pressed forward, and they finally agreed to do the hair touch, which made it an exciting time for all of them.

Selena Gomez and Karla Sofía Gascón play the key roles in ‘Emilia Pérez’, which was directed by Jacques Audiard. Saldaña is nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy. The mostly Spanish-language movie received 10 Golden Globe nominations, including Best Director and Best Motion Picture.

Saldaña talked about her emotional response to being nominated for her first Golden Globe in a different interview. Noting that she hadn’t anticipated such recognition for someone like her, she conveyed her astonishment and appreciation. After learning of the news, she called her mother and then her husband, Marco Perego, to share the moment with her family. She also made contact with her crew, who were all rooting for her from New York and Los Angeles.
