Ariana Grande’s ‘Positions’ is Everything We Expected: A Review

Ariana Grande hopped back onto the music scene with the release of a brand new single, earlier today. The singer-songwriter released her highly anticipated comeback track, ‘Positions’. And, this one’s accompanied by a high-budget music video directed by frequent collaborator, Dave Meyers. 

Grande teased the release of ‘Positions’ last week. She further announced that her sixth studio album will release on the 30th of October. Now, the latest single serves as her first solo release since her work for the record-breaking pop album, ‘thank u, next’. Further, it serves her first solo follow up to a string of high profile collaborations this year. And, in signature fashion, this one combines elements of slick R&B with upbeat pop. Further, to say it serves as a raunchy, albeit tame, ode to love would be fair. 

Grande Meets Expectations

‘Positions’ is a collaborative project between Grande’s team of writers this time around, including – Killah B, James Jarvis, Angelina Barrett, London on da Track, TBHits, Mr. Franks, Nija and Ariana herself. Sonically, the track follows in the same vein of the star’s previous hits. On a first listen, the track rang true of ‘break up with your girlfriend ’cause i’m bored’, ‘boyfriend’, and more.

And, then there’s the writing. While Grande has the ability to pen down witty quips (‘thank u, next’) and play with pop culture metaphors (‘7 rings’), this track is complete with ‘abab’ rhyme schemes and simplistic writing. On the chorus she croons, “Switchin’ the positions for you/ Cookin’ in the kitchen and I’m in the bedroom// I’m in the Olympics, way I’m jumpin’ through hoops/ Know my love infinite, nothin’ I wouldn’t do.” 

Grande occupies an icon worthy space in pop culture right now. With her, every word is gospel, every song is a hit and every project is anticipated with bated breath. So, it’s no surprise that ‘Positions’ was everything you expected it to be. But, it’s nothing new, either.
