Bring Me The Horizon & Yungblud Break Their Shackles in ‘Obey’
The seasoned rockers of the cult band Bring Me The Horizon just teamed up with the rising star, Yungblud, for a buzzing new track. Titled, ‘Obey’ this tune proves to be a thrill ride from start to finish.
‘Obey’ witnesses a fiery set of beats tossed up with a sinister guitar shred, which rises and falls between verses. As the rest of the track unfolds, we see both rock acts take up some intensely dramatic melodies, which they juggle between a lot of screamo and whispered lines. While the tune doesn’t attempt to set itself apart from other high intensity rock numbers, it does prove to be irresistibly catchy, allowing for a even a few headbangs once immersed in the track.
Now, as the title suggests, the song dabbles with some dark themes. At its core, Yungblud and Bring Me The Horizon describe the downfall that awaits one when they abide by the the rules of an oppressive system. Through angsty rhymes, they tell you what it costs to obey. And boy, it’s not pretty. Take a look at the lyrics:
Another day, another systematic nightmare
Commemorate a wonderful life
Bite me first, I’ll bite you back, melodramatic laughter
I stabbed a knife in my eye
Think I’m out my f*cking mind
Brainwashed and I’m feeling fine
Destroy yourself, it feels too good to fade away
Why do I wanna hurt myself?
Speaking of the concept behind, ‘Obey’, Bring Me The Horizon’s frontman, Oli Skyes explained, “We consider ourselves free, but only because the chains are invisible, and we are controlled in ways we don’t even want to think about. They tell us how to live with a smile on their face, like shit ain’t f*cked up, inform us of tragic statistics like it’s nothing… it’s a weird world.”
And yet, it’s a world that both Yungblud and Bring Me The Horizon hope to fight against. And we get a taste of this in their visualizer for the track. Taking a page from the hit anime, Neon Genesis Evangelion, the music video sees both acts sitting within and controlling towering robots. While both metal giants are forced to fight each other, Yungblud and Skyes rebel against this conditioning, ultimately giving their robots a much happier finale.
And so, ‘Obey’ finds its space with the steadily growing league of tracks, all aiming to rebel against the system.
