Doja Cat is Once Again Dragged for Past Racist Remarks
Doja Cat has had an amazing month so far, she collaborated with Nicki Minaj over a remix of her track, ‘Say So’ and that very remix landed her first ever No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Charts. And now, we have to ask, why do all good things have to come to an end? Doja Cat has once again come under fire for allegedly making past racist remarks online. The artist took to social media to respond to this backlash.
Just for some context, Doja has been accused of taking part in past racist video chats. She was even called out for her 2015 song “Dindu Nuffin”. This is said to be a term used to ridicule African-American victims of police brutality that claim they are innocent. In fact, this isn’t the first time Doja Cat has made questionable remarks in the past. Back in 2018, it was unveiled that her Twitter history showed the usage of homophobic slurs. Since then the artist has issued a series of apologies for her derogatory words. She has even deleted all her old tweets.
What Doja Cat Had to Say
But now, it almost feels as though history is repeating itself. Doja took to Instagram to address the controversy after the hashtag #DojaCatIsOverParty began trending on Twitter.
“I want to address what’s been happening on Twitter,” the singer began her Instagram post. “I’ve used public chat rooms to socialize since I was a child. I shouldn’t have been on some of those chat room sites, but I personally have never been involved in any racist conversations. I’m sorry to everyone I offended.”
The singer then attempted to clear the air regarding her track, “Dindu Nuffin”. According to her, she said it was created in “response to people who often used that term to hurt me.” She now acknowledges that “it was a bad decision to use the term in my music.”
While Doja has made some very serious mistakes in the past, she has come out and apologized countless times. And that’s why it’s important to also touch upon the toxic nature of ‘cancel culture’ and the effect it can have on celebrities. Hate spreads through social media platforms like wildfire and it’s honestly extremely difficult to contain. On that note, for a lot of people this isn’t about the issue itself, it’s more about bringing someone else down and making your presence on social media more known. And that’s why, it’s more important to look at Doja’s words and actions recently because she’s already atoned for her past mistakes.
On that note, take a look at Doja’s statement.
