Canadian popstar, Justin Bieber, recently took to his Instagram to put out a statement about white privilege, acknowledging that he and his career have “benefited from black culture”. This is the first time the pop star has taken a stand on the matter of race privilege and discrimination amid George Floyd’s death and the BLM Movement in the US.

Bieber has been heavily influenced by various styles and forms of expression deeply rooted in black culture. From his recent deep dive into classic r&b music to his style through the years, he has been a participant in borrowing culture from the community in question. And in his Instagram post, he has made the acknowledgement public.

In the text post on his Instagram, posted to a following of 138 million people, Justin Bieber wrote: “I am inspired by black culture. I have benefited off of black culture. my style, how I sing, dance, perform, and my fashion have all been influenced and inspired by black culture”.

Bieber goes on to say: “I am committed to using my platform to speak up about racial injustice and systemic oppression”.

It has also been recently revealed that Justin Bieber is one of many musicians and entertainers who have signed a letter to the State of New York demanding the repeal of Article 50-A; 50-A is a law that allows members of the NY State police to keep their records hidden from public view.
