Lily Allen Rejected Payment In Bitcoin, Now Worth Billions
English singer-songwriter Lily Allen is currently regretting her decision to turn down a gig payment offered in 200,000 bitcoin years ago.
Its recent value is estimated at a whopping $9.2 billion! We’d hate to be Lily right now. In hindsight, a lot of us would have made the same decision.
Second Life
The ‘Smile’ star would have been living an extremely luxurious life of a billionaire if she’d have taken up the offer. The cryptocurrency soared to an all-time high this week. Bet she’s not smiling right now.
Lily Allen told sources she was offered the cash alternative to play a gig on the ‘Second Life’ computer game, which would be streamed live, but decided against it.
She posted about the offer all the way back in 2014, writing on Twitter: “About 5 years ago someone asked me to stream a gig live on second life for hundreds of thousands of bitcoins, “as if” I said. #idiot #idiot.”
Admittedly, the financial market has evolved fairly dramatically since then. As of now, a single Bitcoin is worth $46,280.30.
When Lily Allen was offered the concert for 200,000 Bitcoin in 2009, it was much lower. The singer would have pocketed just £445, as it was before the currency’s exchange came into action in 2010.
We feel for you, Lily. But you have to admit, that’s pretty funny.
The Future of Currency?
Many celebrities, musicians included, have expressed their faith in this new cryptocurrency. The surge happened after Tesla had invested $1.5 billion in the cryptocurrency and was also accepting Bitcoin as a payment for its electric cars.
Tesla’s front man Elon Musk recently called Bitcoin ‘a good thing’ but went on to say he reckoned he’d been ‘late to the party’. We’ll go out on a limb and assume, unlike Lily Allen, the tech billionaire would be happy to get paid in Bitcoin.
