The Weeknd & Calvin Harris Arrive with A Dreamy R&B Track ‘Over Now’

Earlier this week, The Weeknd teased an upcoming collaboration with the Scottish DJ, Calvin Harris. We’ve been witness to a number of unusual pair-ups over the past few months so as expected, there’s been a lot of intrigue surrounding their new track, ‘Over Now’. And now that it’s finally made its landing, we can firmly say that we feel sated.

‘Over Now’ proves to be a mellow R&B jam, driven by funky synths and soothing beats, courtesy Calvin Harris. We see The Weeknd juggle between gentle verses and dreamy falsettos. In its soundscape, it appears that ‘Over Now’ has taken a step away from the tracks lying on “After Hours”. The latter witnessed tunes buzzing with a sense of anticipation, pain and melancholia. While this song seems to arrive as an aftermath of sorts. It puts forward a tranquility that seemed to be absent from “After Hours”.

This sentiment is mirrored in the songwriting. We see the young star attempting to move on from a difficult relationship, having to cut ties without looking back. And this time, his decision is final. Take a look:

So, I take this just to forget you
I don’t regret those memories
And I swear I’m not tryna test
I wish you the best with the life you lead

Cause it’s over now, oh yeah
Don’t get too confused, girl, it’s over now, oh yeah, uh
No comin’ back around, baby
Nothin’ left to lose, girl, it’s over now

This track also arrived with its very own visualizer. In the music video, we see The Weeknd dance his way through glitching cities and sun-drenched deserts. We also see Calvin Harris do the same, except in a glittery silver suit. The duo traverse across fantastical landscapes, before slipping through what appears to be an electrifying worm hole towards the climax of the video.

‘Over Now’ proves to be quite the visual treat. And it’s interesting to note that The Weeknd has chosen to go with vibrant animations for this video – a trend that a lot of musicians have jumped aboard this year. The visual effects and graphics are similar to those seen in Travis Scott and Kid Cudi’s ‘The Scotts’. Perhaps pairing abstract characters with dreamy worlds has become the new norm.

So, with ‘Over Now’ it appears that the The Weeknd is closing a chapter of his life. And whether it was the finale you wanted, you’ll have to take a listen and decide.
