The Weeknd’s ‘Too Late’ Sees Blood, Gore & Body Snatchers
The Weeknd just added a fresh thread to his “After Hours” universe. And this time, it arrived in the form of a chilling new visualizer for his track, ‘Too Late’. And if you thought The Weeknd losing his head in ‘In My Eyes’ was unnerving, this one’s set the bar even higher.
For starters, ‘Too Late’ opens with a rush of dreamy ambient sounds and haunting melodic runs. The track then dives straight into the star’s signature, heart wrenching falsettos. Propped up by bass-rattling beats and some stunning production elements, we hear The Weeknd plead for redemption,
It’s way too late to save our souls, baby (oh, oh, yeah)
It’s way too late, we’re on our own (baby, on my own)
I made mistakes, I did you wrong, baby (oh, oh, yeah)
It’s way too late to save myI can’t trust (I can’t trust) where I live (where I live)
Anymore
The Weeknd Dips Into All The Familiar Tropes
Standing at almost 5 and a half minutes, the music video opens with a shot of two fans driving home after plastic surgery. With their faces all bandaged up, we immediately see the video playing into some very dark horror movie tropes. The girls hit the brakes when they spot The Weeknd’s decapitated head lying on the road, only to later pick it up while exclaiming, “He is so hot!”
After a brief makeout session with the floating head in a pool (yes, you read that right) the girls decide to do what any normal person would during this kind of situation: they look for a new body. After luring an unlucky man into their home, the girls are quick to finish the deed. Sitting by his lifeless corpse, with blood-splattered faces and maniacal grins, they then proceed to stitch The Weeknd’s head on the new body.
Squeezing in a rather erotic finale to this disturbing plot, we see the “After Hours” universe spread its roots even further.
