Selena Gets Candid About Her Bipolar
“I Realised That I Was Bipolar”
Selena Gomez took the whole vulnerability thing to a whole new level this past weekend when she revealed her bipolar disorder diagnosis on an Instagram Live with Miley Cyrus.
The American singer has been one of the loudest voices in Hollywood for the cause of mental health awareness, and the importance of understanding and destigmatising the cause. Her efforts have been noted in different and often debated forms, one in particular being her role as Executive Producer on the highly criticised Netflix show “13 Reasons Why” – a series that divided viewers in the extreme; some hated it, and some loved it.
In her candid session with Miley Cyrus (cue our Disney loving 13 year old selves), Gomez quickly revealed that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and with that revelation came the interesting point – “When I go to know more information, it actually helps me. It doesn’t scare me anymore”.
Bipolar disorder is classified as a major mood disorder, and causes extreme mood swings and manic episodes. It is manageable and treatable with professional help.
Selena’s fans rallied around her as soon as the news came out, applauding her for the brave decision to tell her truth. And well, we concur.
