Kenzie
RJ Rohit caught up with Kenzie about her musical journey and her brand-new tracks ‘Paper’ and ‘Sickly Sweet’!
Kenzie’s left-of-centre pop is compelling and confessional, with the kind of lived-in texture that instantly evokes strong emotion. The 18-year-old singer/songwriter infuses every song with incredible sensitivity and the same disarmingly honest demeanour that has helped her build a sizable social media following, whether she is ruminating on a recent heartbreak or discussing universal issues like anxiety. The Los Angeles-based artist admits that it took years of quiet confidence building and self-discovery for her to have the guts to tell her truth.
Dan Henig, Jonny Shorr and Kenzie wrote the song, which Phil Simmonds also produced. ‘Paper’ is the follow-up to her previously released single ‘100 degrees’ and continues to emphasise Kenzie’s unfiltered, emotionally raw lyrics and reimagined sound, previewing the musical direction of her next album. On ‘Paper,’ Kenzie presents a sombre yet hypnotic slow-burner that wonderfully encapsulates the anguish of witnessing the passing of a loved one.
