5 Seconds of Summer

RJ Rohit caught up with Calum Hood and Michael Clifford from 5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS), an Australian pop rock band from Sydney, New South Wales formed in late 2011. Luke Hemmings, who sings lead and plays rhythm guitar, is joined by Michael Clifford, who plays lead guitar, Calum Hood, who plays bass and Ashton Irwin, who plays the drums.

They began their professional lives as YouTube stars before becoming household names, while accompanying the English-Irish boy band, ‘One Direction’ on their ‘Take Me Home’ Tour. One of the most popular Australian bands in history, 5 Seconds of Summer has sold more than 10 million records, sold over 2 million concert tickets worldwide and had their songs streamed more than 7 billion times since 2014.

5 Seconds of Summer made history in the US, by being the first Australian act to have three albums debut at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Throughout the course of their career, 5 Seconds of Summer has experimented with a variety of musical and artistic genres on each of their albums. The band has stated that they don’t want to be limited to one particular genre. Pop rock, pop, pop punk, power pop and new wave have all been used to characterise the musical aesthetic of 5 Seconds of Summer.

The band listed a number of artists as influences for their first studio album, including My Chemical Romance, Blink-182, Green Day, All Time Low, Good Charlotte, Nirvana, Mayday Parade, Busted, McFly, Boys Like Girls and A Day to Remember.
