Brodha V!

RJ Niladri caught up with Bengaluru based hip-hop artist, Brodha V! He is also a lyricist and music producer! Brodha V is a combination of the words ‘brotherhood’ and ‘Vighnesh,’ which is his given name.

The Kanchipuram native who now resides in Karnataka began rapping at the age of 18 and participated in online rap battles on Orkut. When he was an Independent artist, he gained some recognition from the South Indian independent music scene and the hip hop community when he released his mixtape ‘Death Punch’.

He was referred to as “one of the best rappers in the country” by Storypick, and he was included in ScoopWhoop’s top ten list of Indian hip-hop artists who should receive more attention. He is regarded as a member of ‘hip-hop’s’ elite by Rolling Stone India.

Due to his success, Sony Music India signed him in 2013, and he put out his single ‘Aigiri Nandini’ through their label. In the Indian film industry, he worked with musicians like KR$NA, Raghu Dixit, Vishal Dadlani, Benny Dayal, Raftaar and Anirudh Ravichander.

Brodha V released ‘Vainko,’ a joint effort with the Bangalore-based YouTubers, Jordindian. This song quickly went viral and gave rise to the ‘vainko challenge’.

Niharika NM, a famous social media influencer appears in the music video for ‘Bujjima’ by Brodha V, which was released in August 2022. 

After Vainko became a commercial success, Brodha V and the comedy team, Jordindian teamed up once more to create ‘Basti Bounce,’ which is being hailed as Vainko’s successor.

Brodha V’s music combines elements of hip-hop, Hindustani classical, Carnatic classical and Indian folk music. He often uses everyday language in his lyrics, which are based on his own personal experiences.

He was first introduced to rap music through the song ‘Pettai Rap,’ which was composed by A. R. Rahman for the Tamil film, ‘Kadhalan’. He cites early ’90s East coast rappers such as Eminem, Rakim, Nas, Big Pun, Wu-Tang Clan, and Jay-Z as his major inspirations and role models.
