Xperience Sessions With Indie Artist Thomas Itty

RJ Rohit caught up with Indie artist Thomas Itty about his new songs ‘Bangalore’ and ‘Memories of Bangalore.’

Thomas Itty is a singer/songwriter from New York. With roots that trace back to Bangalore, India, Thomas’ journey as a musician has been nothing short of remarkable. His story begins in the vibrant city of Bangalore, where he spent his early years living close to Trinity Church on M.G. Road. The musician studied at Bishop Cotton School from 4th to 10th grade and pursued his PUC at St. Joseph’s. Little did he know that his path would lead him from the streets of Bangalore to the bustling music scene in New York City.

In 1989, Thomas made a move to the United States, where he pursued higher education with a thirst for knowledge. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Arts, followed by a Master’s degree in Media Studies. His academic journey didn’t stop there, as he also earned an MBA in Marketing Management from Pace University.

But Thomas’ journey isn’t confined to the boardrooms of marketing. He has a deep passion for music that has been with him since the age of 17. With over 100 songs to his name, most of which are available on various streaming platforms, his most recent work resonates with a blend of nostalgia, personal experiences, and his deep connection to Bangalore, a city that holds a special place in his heart.

Itty’s two new songs, ‘Bangalore’ and ‘Memories of Bangalore’ beautifully encapsulate the essence of Bangalore. The city’s unique blend of traditions, modernity and diverse cultural influences have left an indelible mark on his artistic soul. These memories are a wellspring of creativity, infusing his songs with a distinct flavour that sets them apart.

Whether it’s the scent of street food in the air, the colourful festivals, or the sound of laughter echoing through the neighbourhoods, Thomas’ memories of Bangalore find their way into his music, creating a connection that exceeds geographical boundaries.

Thomas’ musical journey began while he was studying at St. Joseph’s, where he collaborated with his best friend, Krishna, to write numerous songs. The synergy between the two friends resulted in an album recorded during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

While Thomas used to be a frequent performer in the New York region, he now identifies as more of a bedroom musician. He writes and records his songs in his home studio, where he has complete creative control. Thomas is a self-taught musician, primarily considering himself a singer/songwriter rather than a musician in the traditional sense.

Thomas Itty’s music spans six albums and a collection of singles, all characterized by their acoustic-rock and retro-rock sound. His lyrics delve into the complexities of the human condition with poetic grace, making his songs not only catchy but also thought-provoking.
