How Arwen and Galadriel Are Related in ‘The Lord of the Rings’
In ‘The Lord of the Rings’, Arwen and Galadriel are two of the most significant Elven characters, though they never share screen time in Peter Jackson’s film adaptations. Arwen, portrayed by Liv Tyler, is the daughter of Elrond and eventually becomes the Queen of Gondor by marrying Aragorn. Galadriel, played by Cate Blanchett, is the Lady of Lothlórien, a member of the White Council, and the keeper of one of the Elven Rings of Power. She aids the Fellowship with gifts and wisdom throughout their quest.
Despite their separate roles and locations—Arwen in Rivendell and Galadriel in Lothlórien—they are closely related. In J.R.R. Tolkien’s lore, Galadriel is Arwen’s grandmother. Galadriel’s daughter, Celebrían, married Elrond, and they had Arwen. This makes Galadriel both Arwen’s grandmother and mother-in-law.

In Tolkien’s books, the visual differences between the two are striking: Arwen has dark hair, typical of the Noldor, while Galadriel has a unique blend of golden and silver hair, symbolizing the light of the Two Trees of Valinor. Both characters are renowned for their beauty, with Arwen’s loveliness likened to that of her ancestor Lúthien, and Galadriel celebrated as the most beautiful of her house.
The films expanded their roles differently from the books, with Arwen taking on a more active role in combat and Galadriel appearing in both ‘The Hobbit’ trilogy and ‘The Rings of Power’ series, which explores her past. Although Arwen wasn’t part of the Second Age events depicted in ‘The Rings of Power’, the show may include references or glimpses of her through visions or flash-forwards.
