10 Indie Artists Who Have Become Global Sensations
Independent or Indie Music is found in every country across the globe. In the direct sense of the word, it refers to music produced independently from commercial record labels. India has been witness to an endless string of brilliant Independent artists, each finding a special niche for their ideas and work. What’s interesting to note is that some of India’s greatest indie acts come from various walks of life, and their music is often infused with their experiences and views. They choose the path of freedom by following their passion for music. And, while they do that, they also make their country proud.
As we celebrate our 74th Independence Day, we’ve decided to shine the spotlight on some of the finest homegrown artists out there.

2. These four men came together to form ‘When Chai Meets Toast’ – a Kochi based group which started in 2014. They’re known for their uniquely multilingual productions.
3. Euphoria is an Indian pop rock band formed in 1988. They’ve managed to leave quite a prominent mark on the Indian music landscape and have a good seven studio albums under their belt.
4. The F16s are a pop band from Chennai which formed in 2012. The most fascinating thing about the group is that, these guys come from an engineering background. But when music called, they had to pick up. And interestingly enough, a lot of their music dabbles with the concept of melancholia.
5. This band, which goes by the name ‘Parikrama’ is based out of Delhi and formed in 2012. If you were wondering, their title translates to ‘orbital revolutions’ – bet you didn’t know that, eh?
6. The much-loved Prateek Kuhad gained fame in 2015 with his debut album, “In Tokens and Charms”. He’s skyrocketed to fame ever since and has even notched an award for the best Indian act at the MTV Europe Music Awards in 2016.
7. This band, Sanam, was formed in 2010 and is currently based out of Mumbai. They’re known for bringing their own twist to Bollywood classics. And it was this recipe that transformed them into a global sensation.
8. Indian Ocean was formed in 1990 and is based out of Delhi. They hold the title of – the pioneers of the fusion rock genre in India. The band is known for their mixing of folk and rock music to create a cocktail like no other.
9. These guys, Thaikkudam Bridge, hail from Kerala. The band initially gained fame through their musical show, ‘Music Mojo’ and have gone on to perform at more than 400 venues.
10. This rock band created a lot of buzz as soon as they formed in Chandigarh. Titled, ‘The Local Train’, they’re widely known for their blend of Urdu and Hindi, to craft soulful music, which resonates strongly with today’s youth.
